Burgundy Jazz makes its way across Canada

The Burgundy Jazz team has just returned from an epic pan-Canadian tour of six jazz festivals! In an effort to get the word out about Little Burgundy – Canada's own "Harlem of the North–  and share the webdoc with as many Canadians as possible, we travelled to jazz festivals in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

Our West Coast team featured Burgundy Jazz Producer Katarina Soukup and Director David Eng. They began the tour on June 22nd at the Edmonton Jazz Festival,  where they set up a booths at the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre where the Brenan Brothers 12-piece band was performing, as well as at the Winspear Theatre. From Edmonton, thanks to our sponsorship from VIA Rail, they took a stunning train trip across the Rockies to Vancouver.

Once they arrived in Vancouver, on Saturday June 28th Katarina and David set up shop at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival's outdoor site at David Lam Park. They were happy to discover that fellow Montrealer Lorraine Klaasen was performing at a nearby outdoor stage.

From Vancouver, our team continued on to the Victoria International Jazz Fest on Sunday June 29th. They set up in  Centennial Square in historic Chinatown and enjoyed the free afternoon of student jazz performances. Festival-goers were curious to learn about the history of jazz in Montreal, comparing how jazz scenes evolved across the country. The Burgundy Jazz booth also happened to be located right next to artist Douglas Walker who makes gorgeous found object sculptures made from brass and horns. Meanwhile, our East Coast team was busy at work, beginning their tour in Ontario on June 24th at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Our two Burgundy Jazz ambassadors Carlos Carrión von Reckow and Rae Anna Maitland settled into the busy Nathan Philips Square, where the Amy McConnell & William Sperandei Quintet performed during lunch hour, followed by the Mike Murley Trio for the after-work crowd. 

Ottawa Jazz Festival.

Without skipping a beat, Carlos and Rae continued onto the Ottawa Jazz Festival, where the legendary soul / R&B band Earth Wind & Fire was performing a huge outdoor show on Thursday June 26th. From Ottawa, they made their way back to the "birthplace" of Canadian jazz in Montreal, for the opening of the Montreal International Jazz Festival. 

This year, we're excited to have a Burgundy Jazz kiosk set-up at the the Médiathèque Jazz/La Presse+. Festival-goers were able to come and explore the webdoc at their leisure, on a desktop, iPad and iPhone. The kiosk is accessible year-round during Médiathèque opening-hours, if you haven't already had a chance, check it out!

We're super proud to have completed such an ambitious tour, we've come a long way since our community launch in Little Burgundy last year! The tour served not only to introduce the project to Canadians across the country, but also as a reminder of the deep shared roots between rail travel and jazz music. Jazz Petite Bourgogne voyage à travers le Canada

L'équipe Jazz Bourgogne vient de rentrer d'une tournée pancanadienne de six festivals de jazz! Dans le but de partager l’histoire de la Petite Bourgogne – notre propre « Harlem du Nord » – ainsi que le webdoc avec autant de Canadiens que possible, nous avons assisté à des festivals de jazz en Colombie-Britannique, Alberta, Ontario et Québec.

Notre équipe de la côte ouest incluait la Productrice de Jazz Petite Bourgogne Katarina Soukup Bourgogne et le réalisateur David Eng. Ils ont débuté la tournée le 22 juin au Festival de jazz d'Edmonton, où ils ont mis en place leurs kiosques au Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre, où les Brenan Brothers — un ensemble de 12 musiciens ont joué, ainsi qu’au Théâtre Winspear. À partir d’Edmonton, grâce à notre commandite de VIA Rail, ils ont pris un voyage incroyable en train à travers les Rocheuses jusqu’à Vancouver.

Une fois arrivés à Vancouver, le samedi 28 juin Katarina et David se sont installés au site extérieur du TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival dans le parc David Lam, où ils ont eu la belle surprise de découvrir que la chanteuse montréalaise Lorraine Klaasen jouait sur une scène avoisinante.

À partir de Vancouver, l’équipe à continué leur voyage pour arriver au Victoria International Jazz Fest le dimanche 29 juin. Ils se sont installés au Centennial Square dans le quartier historique chinois, où ils sont apprécié un après-midi de concerts par des étudiants de jazz. Les festivaliers ont été curieux de connaître l’histoire du jazz à Montréal, et de comparer comment le jazz à évolué différemment à travers le pays. L’équipe a eu la chance d’être installé à côté de l’artiste Douglas Walker, qui créée de merveilleuses sculptures à partir d’instruments de cuivre. Entretemps, notre équipe côte est était occupée à entamer leur étape de la tournée en Ontario le 24 juin – au TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Nos deux ambassadeurs Jazz Petite Bourgogne Carlos Carrión von Reckow et Rae Anna Maitland se sont installés dans la vivante Place Nathan Philips, où le quintette Amy McConnell & William Sperandei a joué sur l’heure du lunch, suivi par le Trio Mike Murley pour le 5 à 7. 

Festival de jazz à Ottawa

Carlos et Rae ont continué leur voyage au Festival de jazz à Ottawa, où le groupe légendaire de R & B Earth Wind & Fire ont joué un mégaconcert extérieur le jeudi 26 juin. À partir d’Ottawa, ils ont continué vers le « berceau » du jazz canadien à Montréal, pour l'ouverture du Festival international de Jazz de Montréal. 

Cette année, on est heureux d’avoir un kiosque Jazz Petite Bourgogne installé à la Médiathèque Jazz/La Presse+. Les festivaliers ont pu explorer le webdoc à leur rythme, sur un ordinateur, iPad ou iPhone. Le kiosque est accessible à l’année, pendant les heures d’ouverture de la Médiathèque. Nous sommes très fiers d’avoir complété une tournée aussi ambitieuse, nous avons fait beaucoup de chemin depuis notre lancement communautaire dans la Petite Bourgogne l’année dernière! La tournée a servi non seulement à introduire le projet aux Canadiens à travers le pays, mais aussi à titre de rappel des racines communes entre l’histoire ferroviaire et les origines du jazz.
