Soirées jazz au Centre culturel Georges-Vanier

Dans contexte de notre partenariat qui se poursuit avec le Centre Culturel Georges-Vanier, nous sommes fiers de vous présenter deux soirées de concerts jazz gratuits au cœur de la Petite Bourgogne en août. Le pianiste Cubain-Canadien renommé Rafael Zaldivar nous présentera son style de jazz cubain le 7 août, tandis que le groupe animé de post-bop – le Mario Allard Quintet - jouera le 21 août. À propos de Rafael Zaldivar

Rafael Zaldivar est né à Camagüey, Cuba. Il a commencé à pratiquer les percussions et le piano à l’âge de 10 ans. Il a poursuivi ses études au niveau universitaire à l’Institut Supérieur des Arts de la Havane et à 22 ans, il s’établit au Canada en obtenant rapidement un baccalauréat à l’Université de Montréal ainsi qu’une maîtrise à l’Université McGill. Rafael a eu la chance de jouer avec Barry Harris, Kenny Barron, Steve Coleman, Terri Lyne Carrignton, Nate Smith, Francisco Mela, Greg Osby, Danilo Pérez, Oliver Jones et d’échanger avec Herbie Hancock et Joe Lovano. En 2009, il remporte le Concours de la Relève Jazz en Rafale qui lui donne accès à l’enregistrement de son premier album intitulé : « Life Directions » en novembre 2009. En 2010, Radio Canada, lui décerne le prix d’Artiste Révélation des Années 2010-2011 et dans la même année, Le Conseil des Arts et de Lettres du Québec lui décerne le prix OPUS dans la catégorie d’Artiste Découvert de l’Année. L’artiste est présente récipiendaire du prix Archambault et d’une première nomination au prix SOBA. Il compte avec prestations à travers de L’Europe et Les États-Unis parmi celles du Festival de Jazz North Sea, La Convention de Jazz de Bremen, Le Festival de Jazz de Montreux et récemment Le Festival de Jazz de Bean Town de Boston, aux États-Unis. http://rafaelzaldivarmusic.com/

À propos du Mario Allard Quintet

Cet ensemble aux sonorités post-bop pleines de modernisme évolue dans un milieu sans filet, où seule l’inventivité de ses improvisateurs, aidée du jeu précis et robuste de la section rythmique peuvent nous faire oublier l’absence de tout instrument harmonique. En brisant tour à tour les barrières imposées par l’harmonie traditionnelle jazz et en repoussant les limites du rythme et de la mélodie hors des sentiers battus, le MAQ nous propose une musique à la fois fraîche et intense. Chacun des musiciens exécute avec brio les passages écrits – mélanges nuancés de contrepoints et de tutti – tout en se permettant une liberté presque sans borne dans l’improvisation. 

Formé de Mario Allard (saxophone alto, compositions), Jean-François Fournel (saxophone ténor), David Carbonneau (trompette), Sébastien Pellerin (contrebasse) et d’Alain Bourgeois (batterie), ce groupe a participé aux éditions 2008 de l’Off Festival de Jazz de Montréal et du Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Suite à la prestation du groupe sur l’une des scènes extérieures du Festival, Mario Allard s’impose comme compositeur et remporte le Prix Galaxie de Radio-Canada/CBC pour les pièces Noffo et Bilbasan, retenues par le jury comme les meilleures pièces musicales présentées par les groupes en lice. Le MAQ a participé au National Jazz Awards à Toronto en 2009 et est fréquemment visible sur la scène montréalaise. Jazz nights at the Georges Vanier Cultural Centre

In our ongoing partnership with the Georges Vanier Cultural Centre, we are pleased to present two nights of free jazz concerts in the heart of Little Burgundy this August. Renown Cuban-Canadian pianist Rafael Zaldivar performs his Cuban style jazz on August 7^th  at 7 p.m. while the lively post-bop Mario Allard Quintet performs on August 21^st at 7 p.m. Click here for all the details! 

About Rafael Zaldivar

Rafael Zaldivar was born in Camagüey, Cuba. Coming from a family of musicians, he started playing percussion and piano at age 7 and pursued his undergraduate studies at the Superior Art Institute of Havana. Moving to Canada at age 22, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Montreal and a Master’s degree at McGill University within three years. During his musical career, Rafael has had the opportunity to learn with the greats Barry Harris, Kenny Barron, Danilo Perez, and Greg Osby and to play with the excellent Steve Coleman, Nate Smith, Francisco Mela and Terri Lyne Carrington. He has also had the pleasure of meeting the great Herbie Hancock in Havana, where the two men shared a highly instructive conversation on the subject of music. Rafael has been Awarded New Talent Contest by Radio Canada, OPUS Award by The Quebec Council of Art and Letters and most recently Archambault 6th edition Award New talent Contest. About the Mario Allard Quintet

This post-bop influenced ensemble evolves in a net-free setting, where the creativity of the improvisers, helped with the precise and strong play of the rhythm section, can make us forget the absence of any harmonic instrument. By breaking free of traditional jazz harmony laws, and by pushing the rhythmic and melodic limits beyond tried-and-true expectations, the MAQ puts forward some truly fresh and intense music. Each musician executes brilliantly the written passages – a perfect mixture of counter- points and tutti – while allowing himself an improvisational freedom almost without borders.

Formed of Mario Allard (alto sax, compositions), Jean-François Fournel (tenor sax), David Carbonneau (trumpet), Sebastien Pellerin (double bass) and Alain Bourgeois (drums), this group built up a serious reputation on the Montreal since they launched their first record: MAQ – Mario Allard Quintet – in September 2007. The MAQ took part in the 2008 editions of the Montreal Off Jazz Festival, as well as the Montreal International Jazz Festival. After their amazing performance on one of the MIJF outdoor scene, Mario Allard imposes himself as a composer and wins the Radio-Canada/CBC Galaxie Award for two of his originals: Noffo and Bilbasan, which were chosen as the bests songs presented among the participating groups.
